David Bareford

David Bareford was born and raised in New Jersey and spent his summers on Barnegat Bay, Lake Champlain, and Long Island Sound, fishing, swimming, and sailing. Always interested in drawing and painting, he was dubbed an artist by friends while still in grammar school. After graduating from the University of Montana, he began painting in watercolor and soon dedicated himself to pursuing a career in fine art.

Compelled to live near the ocean, Bareford moved from New Jersey to Rockport, Massachusetts, where he became part of the historic Cape Ann artists’ colony. New England worked its magic on another young painter intent on finding his place in the art world. From the beginning, he felt a strong connection to Cape Ann and its rich artistic heritage.

He achieved success early, with his work regularly accepted into exhibitions of the American Watercolor Society, where he earned Signature Member status. During this period, he also exhibited with Allied Artists of America and the National Academy of Design. Eventually, he turned his attention from watercolor to oil painting, seeking to expand both his vision and artistic expression. His paintings became known for their rich use of color and his ability to capture the moment.

In the late 1980s, Bareford relocated to the seaside town of Stonington, Connecticut, where he established his own studio and continued to work in oil. Throughout the years, he has been fortunate to work with many outstanding galleries and art dealers, for whose guidance, support, and friendship he remains deeply grateful.

David has painted many of New England’s most celebrated coastal locations, including Martha’s Vineyard, Boston, Portland, Newport, Nantucket, Mystic, and Gloucester, among countless others. He also enjoys creating landscapes and winter scenes inspired by areas such as Stowe, the Berkshires, and Concord.

In 2019, Bareford returned to Cape Ann, where he continues to paint both in the studio and en plein air. Inspired by the subjects that interest him most, he remains committed to continual growth and excellence in his work. His extensive body of work has earned international recognition, particularly for his marine paintings, rowing scenes, and numerous commissioned works.

Bareford is an elected member of several professional art organizations, including the Copley Society of Boston. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, where he has served as Managing Fellow and as a member of the Board of Directors. He also maintains his membership in the Rockport Art Association.

Outside the studio, Bareford is known for his easygoing nature and good humor. He enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends whenever the New England weather allows, as well as reading and listening to music. His favorites range from Motown and The Beatles to The Beach Boys and many other classic artists.
